Complete Guide to Performing Umrah for Hajj Tamattu (Also for Regular Umrah)
If you are new to our blog, we highly recommend visiting our full Hajj Guide Collection where you can follow all posts step-by-step for a complete and practical Hajj experience.
If you're performing Hajj Tamattu, your journey begins with Umrah before the actual days of Hajj. This guide will walk you through every step — from wearing Ihram to completing Sa’i and shaving your head.
And if you’re planning Umrah outside Hajj season, this guide works just the same.
๐งผ 1. Wearing Ihram – From Home or Airport
Ihram can be worn at:
-
At Home before leaving for the airport, or
-
At Airport: Most international airports including Islamabad and Lahore have dedicated changing areas near the prayer rooms.
Before entering Ihram, offer two Rakah Nafl:
-
You can pray at the airport masjid.
-
If you're flying with Saudia Airlines, some flights have a small prayer area but do not depend on this. It will not be there is the plane is one of the smaller ones.
After praying, make Niyyah (intention) for Umrah:
๐️ Niyyah (Intention) Dua:
ุงَُّูููู َّ َูุจََّْูู ุนُู ْุฑَุฉً
“Allahumma labbayka ‘umrah.”
(O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it.)
๐ฃ 2. Miqat – Place of Intention
As the flight approaches Miqat (the boundary for Ihram), there will be an announcement on board. The common Miqat for passengers from Pakistan is Qarn al-Manazil (also called As-Sail al-Kabeer).
At this point, recite the Talbiyah:
๐️ Talbiyah:
“Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, laa shareeka lak.”
Repeat it frequently until you reach your hotel in Makkah.
NOTE: For Hajj season, old terminal of the airport is used where navigation is required with the guide. From Jeddah airport terminal, purchase a Data sim according to the number of days of stay, sit at the terminal for almost 1 to 2 hours until bus comes to take from Jeddah to Makkah. It takes approximately 2-3 hours to reach Makkah. Please make sure to charge your phone to full and keep a battery bank because there is no charger at the airport terminal.
๐จ 3. Arrival in Makkah – Rest Before Umrah
Once you land and clear immigration:
-
Go to your hotel, check-in, and freshen up.
-
It’s highly recommended to rest and eat before heading to Haram.
-
Perform Umrah when you feel ready, hydrated and alert, especially if you arrive late at night.
๐ฆฝ 4. Entering the Haram – Wheelchair Access
There are two ramps that lead to First floor for

Wheelchair users are directed to a separate entrance, usually leading straight to the first or second floor.

Able-bodied pilgrims can directly enter the Mataaf (ground level) through King Fahad Gate or other open gates.
๐ข 5. Starting Tawaaf – Watch for the Green Light

Inside Mataaf:
-
Look for the green tube lights on the outer wall — this marks the starting line of Tawaaf.
-
Face the Ka’aba, raise your hands, and make your intention.
You’ll complete 7 anti-clockwise rounds around the Ka’aba. Each round starts and ends at the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad).
- This is your time with Allah, make as many dua'a as possible, drench yourself with the mightiness of Allah and remember him with each and every step that you take.
NOTE: During the last quarter of the Ka’aba, between Rukn-e-Yamani and Hajr-e-Aswad, recite this specific dua above.
๐ฟ Common Dua for Tawaaf:
“Rabbanaa aatina fid-dunyaa hasanatan wa fil-aakhirati hasanatan wa qinaa ‘azaaban-naar.”

(Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.)
๐ง 6. Two Rakah Near Maqam-e-Ibrahim
After completing Tawaaf:
-
Proceed to Maqam-e-Ibrahim and offer two rakah nafl prayer (anywhere behind it if it’s crowded).
-
Plenty of people will already be praying there — wait for a gap or pray in a quieter area of the mosque.
๐♂️ 7. Sa’i – Between Safa and Marwah

Start of Sa'i at Safa (First Floor) |
-
Ground floor pilgrims are led through a one-way exit to the starting point of Sa’i.
-
If you're on the first/second floor, follow the signage or staff guidance to the Sa’i corridor.
Offer dua at Safa and Marwah every time. The first three laps should be done with brisk walking and the remaining laps with normal pace.
There is an area marked with green lights on both sides of the lap. One is supposed to run during the length of the green lights as mentioned in the pictures.
You’ll walk 7 laps between Safa and Marwah — starting at Safa and ending at Marwah.
๐ฐ Good to Know: Zamzam water is available all along the way.

⚠️ 8. No Leaving in Between
Once you start Umrah, you must complete it in sequence:
-
Tawaaf
-
2 Rakah Salah
-
Sa’i
-
Hair cutting/shaving
You cannot exit the Haram for rest or meals unless for valid reasons (like emergencies).
✂️ 9. Haircut or Shaving – End of Umrah
-
Head to any of the barber shops outside Haram. They are clearly marked and usually very affordable (10–20 SAR).
-
Shaving the head (Halq) is preferred for men, while cutting a small portion is sufficient for women.
๐ Tip for Families: Men can cut the hair of accompanying females after getting their own shave/cut done.
✅ Umrah Completed!
Now you're out of Ihram. You can change clothes and resume normal activities.
If this Umrah was for Hajj Tamattu, you’ll now wait in Makkah until 8th Dhul Hijjah, when the Hajj days officially begin.
