Visiting Madinah After Hajj or Umrah: What to Do and What to Avoid

🌟 Visiting the Holy City of Madinah

After completing your Hajj or Umrah, many pilgrims head to Madinah — the second holiest city in Islam — for spiritual reflection and to offer their respects at Masjid an-Nabawi. This post will guide you on what to do, what not to do, and how to make the most of your time there.

🕌 1. Pay Your Salutations at Masjid an-Nabawi

  • Visit the Rawdah Mubarak, the blessed chamber of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
  • Give your Salam respectfully: “Assalamu Alaika Ya Rasool Allah.”
  • Offer Durood as much as possible and as respectfully as possible.
  • Stand calmly and avoid pushing or raising your voice.
  • Make sure NOT TO raise your hand for Dua from the chamber, it is shirk!
  • Dua can only be done from ALLAH!

📍 2. The Rawdah: A Garden from Paradise

  • Requires Nusuk app booking (men and women have separate time slots).
  • Make sure to reach the entrance 15-20 minutes before the time assigned.
  • Located between the Prophet’s ﷺ grave and his pulpit. This place is known as Riyad ul-Jannah — "A garden from the gardens of Paradise."
  • Offer Nawafil here. There will be limited time so 2-4 nawafil are enough.
  • Make sure NOT TO raise your hand for Dua from anything like the pillar, minbar etc. It is shirk!
  • Dua can only be done from ALLAH!

⏰ 3. Spend Time in Worship

  • Masjid an-Nabawi is perfect for quiet reflection, Qur’an recitation, and Nafl prayers.
  • Praying one Salah here equals to 1,000 prayers in reward.
  • Try to offer all FIVE PRAYERS in the Masjid for maximum rewards.
  • People usually come at Zuhr prayer and stay at the masjid reciting Quran and go back to hotel after Maghrib or Isha.

🛑 4. What Not to Do in Madinah

  • Don’t take selfies or loud videos near Rawdah or the Prophet’s ﷺ grave.
  • Don’t crowd, push, or speak loudly — it’s a place of peace and etiquette.
  • Follow the walking paths set by the local authorities, they keep on changing to control the crowd.
  • Avoid unnecessary walking in groups that disturbs worshippers.

🗺️ 5. Important Ziyarah Sites in Madinah

  • Jannat ul-Baqi: Graveyard where many Sahaba and family of Prophet ﷺ are buried.
  • Masjid Quba: First mosque of Islam, reward of Umrah for praying two rakah here.
  • Mount Uhud: Visit the site of the Battle of Uhud and grave of Hazrat Hamza (RA).

🎒 6. Tips for Your Visit

  • Wear modest and respectful clothing at all times.
  • Drink and enjoy Zam Zam.
  • If you want to buy Dates, go to a local farm house, there are many nearby rather than buying old dates from local stores
  • Carry a pocket prayer mat, prayer beads, and a small Qur’an.
  • Stay hydrated and use sun protection during ziyarah trips.

🌹 Final Thoughts

Visiting Madinah is not obligatory but it is a deeply spiritual experience for Muslims. It is a city of peace, love, and blessings — and every step you take there is part of your connection with the legacy of Islam. Treat it with reverence, patience, and humility.
