The Jabal Shams Canyon

Jabel Shams is approximately 244km, three and a half hours' drive from Muscat. The road is paved until the last 17-20km which are unpaved. The good thing is that even sedans can be taken to Jabel Shams but if you are a tourist, we do not recommend going on a sedan, rather take AWD or 4x4. Tourists can stay for a day or two and visit two hiking points from the resort site.

The place is a camping heaven, the sunset and the sunrise are beyond anyone's perceptions, in fact sunrise gives one of the most mesmerizing scenes on the mountain top where you are facing down the canyon.

You can camp anywhere you want as long as you are in a safe distance from the drop. Make sure to arrange food, portable washroom, water and first aid in advance. There are many villas, holiday rooms, chalets and two resorts at the top. One can make arrangements according to their own requirements. As of writing this there is a mosque which is locked after Isha prayer.

Camping at Jabal Shams

There are two places, one is the summit that is a 22km hike from Jabal Shams camp site. There is not shade or water supply along the way. For that must take a lot of water. Minimum 10 liters.

The other place is the balcony walk that leads to the bottom of the wadi to a hidden stream. This as well needs a walk of approximately two and a half hours.
